Purple Cabbage & Blueberry Wellness Drink

Description

This naturally vibrant Purple Cabbage & Blueberry Wellness Drink combines antioxidant-rich red cabbage, juicy blueberries, fresh lemon juice, and honey into a refreshing homemade beverage. Its beautiful deep-purple color comes from natural anthocyanins, making it as attractive as it is delicious. Enjoy it chilled over ice, diluted with sparkling water, or served warm on cool days.

Ingredients

  • ½ medium red cabbage, chopped
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 6 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2–4 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup), to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger (optional)
  • 2–3 whole cloves (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)

For Serving

  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Sparkling water (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Combine Ingredients

Place the chopped cabbage, blueberries, water, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon stick into a large saucepan.

Step 2: Simmer

Bring to a gentle boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Strain

Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a large bowl or pitcher.

Press gently on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible.

Discard or compost the solids.

Step 4: Sweeten

While still warm, stir in the honey until dissolved.

Add the fresh lemon juice and mix well. (The lemon may make the drink appear more pinkish-purple due to the cabbage’s natural pigments.)

Step 5: Chill

Allow the drink to cool completely.

Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Serve over ice with lemon slices and mint, if desired.

Notes

  • Fresh blueberries provide the best flavor, but frozen work just as well.

Tips

  • Mix with sparkling water for a refreshing spritzer.
  • Add fresh mint or basil while simmering for extra flavor.

 Questions

Q: Can I skip the honey?
A: Yes. Leave it unsweetened or use maple syrup or another preferred sweetener.

Q: How long does it keep?
A: Refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 5 days.

Q: Can I freeze it?
A: Yes. Freeze for up to 3 months or as ice cubes.

Q: Why did the color change after adding lemon?
A: Red cabbage contains natural pigments that change color depending on acidity. Lemon juice makes the drink shift toward a brighter pink-purple hue.
