Mediterranean Pasta Salad

There are some recipes that instantly make me think of warm weekends, long lunches, and a table full of people.

This Mediterranean Pasta Salad is one of them.

It’s colorful, fresh, tangy, and packed with everything I love about Mediterranean flavors—juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumber, salty Kalamata olives, creamy feta, red onion, and plenty of fresh herbs. Everything is tossed with tender pasta and a bright lemon-oregano dressing.

I first made this on a weekend when my family was coming over and I wanted something I could prepare ahead of time.

I had pasta in the pantry and a refrigerator full of vegetables, so I started chopping.

The bowl just kept getting more colorful.

Once I added the feta, olives, and homemade dressing, I gave it a quick toss and put it in the refrigerator.

By the time everyone arrived, the flavors had come together beautifully.

And somehow, even the people who said they weren’t “big salad people” kept going back for another helping.

That’s when I knew this recipe was going to be a regular in our kitchen.

I love making it for family lunches, picnics, barbecues, potlucks, and those evenings when I want something light but still satisfying.

How to Make Mediterranean Pasta Salad
Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente.

Don’t overcook it.

The pasta needs to be firm enough to hold up to the dressing and vegetables.

Drain the pasta and rinse briefly under cool water.

Let it drain thoroughly.

Step 2: Prepare the Vegetables

While the pasta is cooking, prepare the vegetables.

Halve the cherry tomatoes.

Dice the cucumber.

Thinly slice the red onion.

Chop the roasted red peppers and fresh herbs.

Place everything in a large serving bowl.

Step 3: Make the Dressing

In a small jar or bowl, combine:

Olive oil
Lemon juice
Red wine vinegar
Dijon mustard
Oregano
Garlic
Salt
Black pepper
Honey

Whisk or shake until well combined.

Taste and adjust the seasoning.

If you like a more lemony salad, add another squeeze of fresh lemon.

Step 4: Combine Everything

Add the cooled pasta to the bowl with the vegetables.

Add the Kalamata olives and feta.

Pour about three-quarters of the dressing over everything.

Toss gently until well combined.

Step 5: Chill

Cover the salad and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

This allows the pasta to absorb the dressing and gives all those Mediterranean flavors time to mingle.

Step 6: Finish Before Serving

Remove the pasta salad from the refrigerator.

Give it a good toss.

If it looks a little dry, add the remaining dressing.

Finish with extra feta, fresh herbs, and a squeeze of lemon.

Serve chilled or at room temperature.

My Best Tips
Don’t Overcook the Pasta

Slightly firm pasta holds up much better in a cold pasta salad.

Salt the Pasta Water

The pasta is the foundation of the salad, so seasoning the cooking water helps build flavor from the beginning.

Let the Pasta Cool

Hot pasta can wilt the vegetables and make the feta overly soft.

Dress It While Slightly Warm

If you toss the pasta with a little dressing while it’s still slightly warm, it can absorb more flavor.

Then add the vegetables once the pasta has cooled.

Taste Before Serving

Pasta absorbs dressing as it sits.

Always taste the salad again before serving and add more lemon, olive oil, salt, or vinegar if needed.

What Pasta Works Best?

Almost any short pasta works.

My favorites are:

Rotini
Fusilli
Bow ties
Penne
Gemelli
Farfalle

The little twists and ridges in rotini and fusilli are especially good at holding onto the dressing.

Can I Make It Ahead?

Absolutely.

In fact, this salad is even better when made ahead.

You can prepare it up to 24 hours in advance.

Keep it refrigerated and give it a good toss before serving.

You may want to add a little extra dressing just before serving because the pasta will absorb some overnight.

How to Store It

Store the pasta salad in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

It will generally keep well for 3–4 days.

If you’re making it for a gathering, keep it chilled until you’re ready to serve.

What to Serve With Mediterranean Pasta Salad

This salad pairs beautifully with:

Grilled chicken
Grilled fish
Garlic shrimp
Chicken souvlaki
Grilled steak
Lamb kebabs
Roasted vegetables
Hummus and pita
Falafel

It’s also substantial enough to serve as a light lunch on its own.

Perfect for Picnics and Potlucks

This is one of my favorite recipes to bring to gatherings because it can be made ahead and travels well.

For outdoor events, keep the salad chilled and avoid leaving it in the heat for extended periods.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use whole-wheat pasta?

Absolutely. Whole-wheat pasta adds extra fibre and a slightly nuttier flavor.

Can I make this gluten-free?

Yes. Use your favorite gluten-free pasta and check that all other packaged ingredients are certified gluten-free if necessary.

Can I leave out the feta?

Yes. The salad will still be delicious. You can replace it with another cheese or add chickpeas for extra substance.

Can I use green olives?

Definitely. Green olives work beautifully alongside Kalamata olives or as a replacement.

Why does my pasta salad become dry?

Pasta continues absorbing dressing as it sits. Simply add another splash of olive oil and lemon juice before serving.

Can I add chicken?

Yes. Grilled lemon-herb chicken is especially delicious with these Mediterranean flavors.

Should Mediterranean pasta salad be served cold?

It’s delicious chilled, but you can also let it sit at room temperature for about 15–20 minutes before serving so the flavors become more pronounced.

Final Thoughts
