Keto Caesar Smash Burger
Sometimes you want a burger.
Not a salad pretending to be dinner. Not a bowl of vegetables. A real, juicy, messy, cheesy burger.
But if you’re keeping things low-carb, that doesn’t mean you have to give up the fun.
This Keto Caesar Smash Burger is my answer.
Thin beef patties are smashed onto a screaming-hot skillet until the edges become crispy and caramelized. They’re topped with melted Parmesan, crisp lettuce, and a creamy Caesar-inspired sauce.
And instead of a traditional bun, you can serve everything wrapped in crisp lettuce, tucked into a low-carb bun, or simply stack the burger with all those delicious toppings.
I made these one evening when I was craving both a Caesar salad and a really good burger and couldn’t decide which one I wanted.
So I stopped choosing.
I made the burger first, whipped up a quick Caesar-style sauce, added plenty of Parmesan, and piled crisp lettuce on top.
The first bite was exactly what I hoped for—savory beef, crispy edges, creamy dressing, salty Parmesan, and fresh crunch all together.
My family was skeptical when I told them I was making a “Caesar burger.”
They stopped being skeptical after the first bite.
Now it’s one of those recipes I make whenever we’re in the mood for burger night but want something a little different.

How to Make Keto Caesar Smash Burgers
Step 1: Make the Caesar Sauce
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, Parmesan, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper.
Stir until smooth.
Taste it.
If you want more lemon, add another small squeeze.
If you want a stronger Caesar flavor, add another little spoonful of Parmesan.
Set the sauce aside while you cook the burgers.
Step 2: Form the Beef
Divide the ground beef into 8 small portions.
Gently roll each portion into a loose ball.
Don’t pack the meat too tightly.
Loose balls smash more easily and give you those beautiful crispy edges.
Step 3: Heat the Pan
Place a cast-iron skillet or heavy frying pan over high heat.
Let it get very hot.
You want the beef to make an immediate sizzling sound when it hits the pan.
Step 4: Smash the Burgers
Lightly grease the pan with butter or avocado oil.
Place the beef balls into the hot skillet, leaving plenty of space between them.
Using a sturdy spatula or burger press, smash each ball firmly into a very thin patty.
Hold the pressure for several seconds.
Don’t keep pressing the burger while it cooks.
The goal is to create maximum contact between the beef and the hot pan.
Step 5: Season
Sprinkle the patties with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Cook for approximately 1½–2 minutes, until the edges are deeply browned and crispy.
Step 6: Flip
Scrape underneath each patty with a firm spatula.
Flip it.
Cook the second side for another 1–2 minutes.
Add cheese during the final 30–60 seconds if you’re using it.
Let it melt completely.
Step 7: Build the Burger
Place a large romaine leaf on a plate.
Add one smash patty.
Top with a spoonful of Caesar sauce.
Add shredded romaine.
Sprinkle generously with Parmesan.
Place a second smash patty on top.
Finish with another drizzle of Caesar sauce and freshly cracked black pepper.
Add a squeeze of lemon if desired.
Serve immediately.
The Secret to Great Smash Burgers
The most important thing is a very hot pan.
You want the beef to develop a deep brown crust quickly.
Don’t overcrowd the pan.
If necessary, cook the burgers in batches.
And once you’ve smashed the beef, leave it alone.
Constantly moving or pressing the patties can prevent that beautiful crust from developing.
Why Use 80/20 Ground Beef?
The extra fat helps keep the burgers juicy and creates those crispy, flavorful edges that make smash burgers so good.
You can use leaner beef, but the texture will be less rich.
Can I Make These Without Cheese?
Absolutely.
The Parmesan in the Caesar sauce still gives you plenty of cheesy flavor.
For a dairy-free version, omit the cheese and use a suitable dairy-free Parmesan alternative.
Can I Use Chicken?
Yes, but ground chicken behaves differently and won’t develop exactly the same beefy crust.
For the classic smash-burger experience, ground beef is best.
Can I Use a Regular Burger Bun?
Of course.
If you’re not strictly keto, serve the burger on a toasted brioche or sesame bun.
For a low-carb option, use your favorite keto-friendly bun.
Keto Serving Options
You don’t need traditional bread to enjoy this burger.
Try:
Lettuce Wrap
Use crisp romaine leaves as the “bun.”
Low-Carb Bun
Use a keto-friendly burger bun.
Parmesan Crisps
Use large Parmesan crisps as a crunchy, cheesy alternative.
Burger Bowl
Skip the bun completely.
Put the beef over chopped romaine with Caesar sauce, Parmesan, avocado, and bacon.
Delicious Variations
Bacon Caesar Smash Burger
Add crispy bacon.
The smoky bacon with the creamy Caesar sauce is incredible.
Spicy Caesar Smash Burger
Add hot sauce or crushed red pepper flakes to the Caesar sauce.
Avocado Caesar Burger
Add sliced avocado for extra creaminess.
Jalapeño Caesar Burger
Add thinly sliced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
Double Cheeseburger Caesar Style
Use four very thin patties instead of two thicker ones.
This gives you even more crispy edges.
Can I Make the Caesar Sauce Ahead?
Yes.
The sauce can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
In fact, the flavor becomes even better after sitting for a little while.
Is Traditional Caesar Dressing Keto?
It depends on the recipe.
Some bottled Caesar dressings contain added sugar or other higher-carb ingredients.
Making your own sauce makes it easier to control what goes into it.
Always check labels if you’re following a strict keto diet.
Can I Add Anchovies?
Absolutely.
For a more traditional Caesar flavor, mash 1–2 anchovy fillets into the sauce.
They add savory depth without making the sauce taste strongly fishy.
Can I Add Bacon?
Yes—and I highly recommend it.
Crispy bacon adds saltiness and crunch while making the burger even more indulgent.
Meal Prep
The sauce can be made ahead, and the beef can be portioned and shaped shortly before cooking.
For the best texture, cook the smash burgers fresh.
You can prepare the lettuce and toppings ahead and keep everything refrigerated separately.
Storage
Cooked burger patties can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.
Store the Caesar sauce separately.
Reheat the patties in a skillet or air fryer until warmed through.
Can I Freeze the Patties?
Yes.
Form the raw beef into balls or patties and freeze them individually on a lined tray.
Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag.
Use within about 2–3 months for best quality.
Thaw in the refrigerator before cooking.
What to Serve With Keto Caesar Smash Burgers
Since the burgers are rich, I like serving them with something fresh or crunchy.
Try:
- Cucumber salad
- Pickles
- Roasted broccoli
- Air fryer zucchini
- Avocado salad
- Parmesan crisps
- Cauliflower fries
- Crispy Brussels sprouts
For an extra Caesar-inspired meal, serve a small Caesar salad alongside the burger.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a smash burger different?
Instead of forming thick patties, small balls of ground beef are smashed thinly onto a very hot cooking surface. This creates a larger browned surface area and wonderfully crispy edges.
Why aren’t my burgers crispy?
Your pan may not be hot enough, or you may be overcrowding it. Give the burgers plenty of space and let the pan heat thoroughly.
Should I press the burgers after flipping?
No. Once you’ve smashed them, leave them alone as much as possible.
Can I use ground turkey?
Yes, but the burgers will be leaner and less rich. Adding a little oil can help with browning.
Can I make these without lettuce?
Absolutely. Use a keto bun, Parmesan crisps, or serve everything as a burger bowl.
Can I use store-bought Caesar dressing?
Yes, if you have a favorite low-carb Caesar dressing. Check the nutrition label if you’re following strict keto.
Are anchovies necessary?
No. They add classic Caesar depth but aren’t required.
Final Thoughts
This Keto Caesar Smash Burger happened because I couldn’t decide between two cravings.
I wanted the crispy, juicy satisfaction of a smash burger.
But I also wanted that creamy, garlicky, Parmesan-packed flavor of a Caesar salad.
So I put them together.
And I’m very glad I did.
The thin beef patties get those incredible crispy edges while staying juicy inside. The Caesar sauce adds richness, the Parmesan brings salty nuttiness, and the crunchy romaine gives everything a fresh bite.
It’s messy.
It’s cheesy.
It’s creamy.
And it’s exactly the kind of low-carb dinner that doesn’t feel like you’re missing anything.
I especially love serving these on a busy Friday night when everyone wants something fun for dinner but nobody wants a complicated recipe.
Put the skillet on the stove, get it screaming hot, smash those beef balls down, and let the edges crisp.
Then comes the fun part—building the burgers.
Extra sauce?
Yes.
More Parmesan?
Obviously.
Bacon?
Always a good idea.
And don’t worry if the Caesar sauce starts dripping down your hands.
That’s part of the experience.
A great burger was never meant to be eaten perfectly.
Just grab a few napkins, take a big bite, and enjoy. 🍔🥬🧀
