🧅 Mini Air Fryer Blooming Onions
🕒 Prep Time: 15 minutes
🕒 Cook Time: 15 minutes
🍽️ Servings: 4 (makes 4 mini onions)
🧾 Ingredients:
-
4 small yellow onions (about 2–3 inches wide)
-
½ cup all-purpose flour
-
1 tsp paprika
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
-
1 large egg
-
¼ cup milk
-
Cooking spray or oil
🥣 For Dipping Sauce (Optional):
-
¼ cup mayonnaise
-
2 tbsp ketchup
-
1 tsp horseradish (optional)
-
½ tsp paprika
-
Pinch of salt & pepper
🔪 Instructions:
1. Prepare the Onions
-
Peel the onions and cut a small slice off the root end to make them stand flat.
-
Place each onion root-side down. Starting ½ inch from the top, make 4–6 vertical cuts down the onion (like cutting a pizza), being careful not to cut all the way through.
-
Gently separate the “petals” with your fingers to help them bloom.
2. Bread the Onions
-
In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne.
-
In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
-
Dip each onion into the egg mixture, coating well, then dredge in the seasoned flour, getting into all the layers. For extra crispiness, repeat the egg + flour steps once more.
3. Air Fry the Onions
-
Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.
-
Spray the basket and the onions generously with oil spray.
-
Place onions in the air fryer, cut side up, and cook for 12–15 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
4. Make the Sauce
-
While the onions cook, mix all sauce ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Chill until ready to serve.
