Homemade Air Fryer Chips recipe that’s crispy, light, and perfectly seasoned—an easy way to enjoy chips without the excess oil!
Homemade Air Fryer Chips
Ingredients:
4 large potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet work well)
2 tablespoons olive oil (or avocado oil)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
Salt to taste
Fresh cracked pepper (optional)
Fresh herbs (optional, such as thyme or rosemary, for garnish)
Instructions:
Prepare the potatoes:
Wash and peel the potatoes (or leave the skins on for extra texture and nutrients). Slice them very thinly using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer to get uniform slices. Aim for about 1/8-inch thickness.
Soak the potato slices in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes. This step helps to remove excess starch and promotes crispiness.
Dry the potatoes:
After soaking, drain the water and pat the potato slices dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Removing moisture is key for crispy chips.
Season the chips:
Place the dried potato slices in a large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and toss to coat evenly.
Add garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and salt (and pepper, if desired). Toss again to make sure the seasonings are evenly distributed.
Preheat the air fryer:
Preheat your air fryer to 360°F (180°C) for about 3-5 minutes. This ensures the chips cook evenly once placed in the basket.
Air fry the chips:
Place the seasoned potato slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding the basket to ensure the chips cook evenly. You may need to cook the chips in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
Cook for 10-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crisping. Check for crispiness and golden-brown edges. The time may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your slices and the model of your air fryer.
Check for crispiness:
If the chips aren’t as crispy as you like, air fry for an additional 2-3 minutes or until the desired crispiness is achieved.
Serve:
Once the chips are golden and crispy, remove them from the air fryer. Taste and sprinkle with a little more salt if desired.
Garnish with fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for a herby twist, or enjoy as is with your favorite dipping sauce!
Tips:
Thinness matters: Make sure the potato slices are as uniform and thin as possible. If they are too thick, they may not crisp up as well.
Seasoning variations: You can change up the seasonings to suit your preferences, such as using cheese powder for cheesy chips or adding a pinch of cayenne pepper for heat.
Storage: Leftover chips can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. If they lose some crispiness, you can pop them back in the air fryer for a couple of minutes to refresh them.
Enjoy your Homemade Air Fryer Chips as a snack, side dish, or with your favorite dipping sauce!
