Air Fryer German Potato Pancakes (Kartoffelpuffer) — crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and way less oily than the traditional fried version!
🥔 Air Fryer German Potato Pancakes (Kartoffelpuffer)
✅ Ingredients:
-
4 medium russet potatoes (about 1.5 lbs), peeled
-
1 small onion
-
1 egg
-
2–3 tbsp all-purpose flour (adjust as needed)
-
½ tsp salt (or to taste)
-
¼ tsp black pepper
-
Optional: pinch of nutmeg or garlic powder for added flavor
-
Spray oil or olive oil in a spray bottle
🔧 Instructions:
-
Grate Potatoes & Onion
-
Use a box grater or food processor to finely grate the potatoes and onion.
-
Place in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze out as much moisture as possible (important for crispiness!).
-
-
Mix Batter
-
In a large bowl, mix the grated potato-onion mixture with the egg, flour, salt, pepper, and optional seasonings until combined.
-
-
Preheat Air Fryer
-
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3–5 minutes.
-
-
Form Patties
-
Scoop 2–3 tablespoons of the mixture and flatten into small patties (~½ inch thick).
-
Lightly spray both sides with oil.
-
-
Air Fry
-
Place patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket (don’t overcrowd).
-
Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy on both sides.
-
-
Repeat & Serve
-
Repeat in batches. Serve warm with applesauce, sour cream, or a sprinkle of chives.
-
📝 Tips:
-
Texture too wet? Add a bit more flour.
-
Extra crispy? Add a tablespoon of cornmeal or fine breadcrumbs to the mixture.
-
Works with sweet potatoes too!
