Southern Buttermilk Dream Biscuits

Fluffy, buttery, and just the right amount of golden brown — these biscuits are comfort food at its finest. Serve them warm with butter, honey, or jam, and you’ll never look at store-bought the same way again.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 4 heaping teaspoons baking powder

  • 4 teaspoons white sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1¾ cups fresh buttermilk

  • 2–3 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing on top)

Instructions:

1. Preheat and Prepare:

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

2. Cut in the Butter:

In a large mixing bowl, add the cold, cubed butter to the flour.
Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs — like small peas.

3. Combine Dry Ingredients:

To the butter-flour mixture, add:

  • Baking powder

  • Sugar

  • Salt

Mix gently until evenly distributed.

4. Add the Buttermilk:

Pour in the buttermilk and stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until just combined.
The dough should be slightly sticky but still manageable — don’t overmix.

5. Shape the Dough:

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
Gently pat (not roll) the dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle.

6. Cut Out the Biscuits:

Use a round biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass to cut out biscuits.
Place them close together on the prepared baking sheet.
Gather scraps, re-pat the dough, and cut out more biscuits as needed.

7. Butter Bath:

Melt 2–3 tablespoons of butter and brush generously over the tops of the unbaked biscuits.

8. Bake:

Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the edges look set.

9. Serve Warm:

Let cool slightly on a wire rack, then serve warm with extra butter, honey, or your favorite jam.

Cook’s Notes & Tips:

  • No Buttermilk?
Make a substitute by mixing 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar with 1¾ cups milk. Let sit for 5–10 minutes.

  • Gentle Hands = Fluffy Biscuits:
Avoid overmixing or overworking the dough, which can make biscuits dense.

  • Storage:
Best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Reheat in a 300°F oven for 5–7 minutes to restore warmth and fluff.
